On October 29, an excursion was held at the Institute of Marine Geology and Geophysics of the Far East Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences as part of measures to popularize scientific knowledge among the population.

The guests visited the herbarium room, the mineralogical museum and the scientific and technical library, familiarized themselves with the structural features of the building of the institute, built during the times of the governorship of Karafuto.

Sabirova Nadezhda Dmitrievna, Cand. biol. Sciences, Art. Researcher at the laboratory of coastal geosystems, curator of the collection of vascular plants, showed the tourists herbarium of vascular plants of the Sakhalin region, including the collections of Japanese botanists from the beginning of the 20th century. Nadezhda Dmitrievna also told about the books published by the institute staff in different years, about the plants of our island region. As a gift, the tourists received a brochure “Forest Storeroom”.

Rybin Alexander Viktorovich, Cand. geol.-miner Ph.D., head of the laboratory of volcanology and volcanic danger, conducted a tour of the mineralogical study of the institute, spoke about its exhibits, about active and dormant volcanoes of the Kuril Islands, about expeditions and monitoring of volcanic activity. The tourists were shown timely information on the video surveillance of the erupting volcano Ebeko (Paramushir Island). Alexander Viktorovich answered questions of interest to guests.

In the reading room of the scientific and technical library, the excursionists listened to the head of the department of information and analytical support for scientific activity Kremneva Irina Petrovna, who spoke about the history of the institute, about the library funds. Guests were given the opportunity to see some rare Japanese and European publications.
